Metal stampings is an efficient less costly method of producing simple or complex three-dimensional parts punched out in a continuous sheet of metal.

A metal stampings press consists of the press bed, a die made to a specific configuration that matches the shape of the end part, a slide that keeps the flat sheet of material moving on the press bed and the punch that forces the sheet metal through the die. The punch also matches the contour of the part but somewhat smaller to fit between the die and the material. The punch is made from hardened tool steel or carbide. The die is made of hardened steel. Designing and making punches and dies for the metal stamping presses, takes skilled craftsmen using EDM, jig boring, grinding and lapping machines that create exceedingly precise dies.

Metal stampings presses are typically automated and computerized. Metal stampings presses come in many sizes, operating speeds, tonnage capacities and stroke lengths. Automated presses move the slide at preset intervals and can have the tonnage, stroke length and speed adjusted. They work well for metal stampings that require repeatable pressure. Metal stampings can be made from exotic metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, nonferrous metals, alloys and thermoplastic materials. The thickness of the material does not change during the stamping process.

One of the secondary processes that metal stampings utilizes includes plating, which enhances the durability by prohibiting rusting and increases the solder ability of the part. Plating materials can be nickel, gold, palladium or tin. Material can also be pre-plated before the metal stamping is performed. The metal stampings is then cleaned to remove any remaining oils that may have been used in the production of the part. Heat treating is another secondary operation that increases the strength of the metal stampings. Deburring or tumbling removes any remaining sharp corners.

Complex metal stampings are made using progressive dies. Progressive die metal stampings uses both cutting and forming processes. While maintaining a minimum wall thickness, the material goes through several die and punch forming processes in consecutive stages producing several imprints at once. Progressive die metal stampings are manufactured quickly and cost effectively because the material remains in the same die station throughout the metal stampings process.
